A rare foray into romantic gratitude or gratuitous romanticism (depending on the listener’s own perspective on these matters).  Nevertheless, this song is a long overdue dedication. She knew not that this song existed before the CD was released, although doubtless she had heard its prolonged genesis through the adjoining wall between the studio and the living room. Thus, the tune she will be familiar with, but the lyrics will have stunned her that I would dare venture, after so many years, into this romantic territory. She had, I think, given up hope that I would pen her such a song. In fact, that hope may have metamorphosed into something approaching dread, given my normal irascible rantings on matters of the heart. Still, here it is. Schmaltz masquerading as affection, maybe; middle-aged comfort instead of passion, perhaps. But I’m better off having done something before vague and sickly nostalgia of old age was all that was possible.

One For Julie (My Lucky Stars)

Somebody told me I’ve got nothing to show
For thirty-five years of this ebb and flow
Oh, that’s just not so
You’re not her husband, how the hell would you know?

You’d better be careful what you say to her
She doesn’t forget it very easily, sir
Oh, never talk in your sleep
Don’t make any promises that you cannot keep

I like to be beneath the night sky
Taking for granted that she’s close by
Oh, by the light of Mercury and Mars
I like to be thanking my luck stars

She has a particular way to be
She has a singular appeal to me
Oh, I’ve got nothing more to say
It’s none of your business anyway
